I believe the role of a teacher is to inspire students to seek knowledge - rather than try to simply transmit it. I aim to provide students with opportunities to explore and question. I attempt to challenge students and probably raise more questions than provide answers.True learning happens through a process of exploration, collaboration and self-discovery, which in turn leads to transformation. I feel it is vital to ensure that the classroom allows formation of a community that is supportive, respectful and non-threatening, so that growth, both personal and intellectual, can occur.

Robert T Lindeboom English as a Second Language (ESL) Department M.A.., San Francisco State University |
Professor Lindeboom has been teaching at CCSF since 1978.
He says that we teach languages backwards---listening before speaking. His teaching goal is to change that. To that end, he has developed an innovative, interactive, speaking method that stresses speaking over listening. He has formalized this method in his book, "People Talk". He says that "People Talk" is the most important book to emerge in education in the past 177 years because it models how we can displace passive learning with active learning so as not to teach backwards. Teaching backwards means we teach to memory and not to thinking. That is the single, biggest problem in education and something that needs to be changed. For further information regarding Professor Lindeboom's method, see montagemethod.com.
Professor Lindeboom has written and published: Job Lines #1; Job Lines #2; and People Talk.
His enjoys reading, writing, seeing films, traveling abroad, developing teaching materials, and coaching baseball.

Lia J Smith English as a Second Language (ESL) Department B.A., University of California, Los Angeles; M.A., University of San Francisco |
Ms. Smith has been teaching at CCSF since 1984. She states that "Community Colleges are the heart of education in the United States and it is the students who make the college a dynamic arena for education. I understand that my ESL students are not majoring in English. They need English to take classes in their fields of study. Writing skills are learned by writing. Students need to be curious, inquisitive and open. It is the job of the instructor to arouse curiosity, model inquisitiveness, and provide a learning environment where students feel respected, inspired and encouraged. ESL students need explicit instruction in grammar. Grammar does not 'come along'. I teach my students how to be their own best editors."
She is a previous chair and current member of the ESL Credit Curriculum Committee and has written curriculum for both the non-credit and credit divisions of the ESL department. She also is a present participant in the Asian Infusion seminar.
Ms. Smith helped implement district-wide white paper recycling in the late 1980's and worked on a student/faculty/administrator district committee to establish an environmental policy for CCSF. She worked with Joy Durighello to plant oak trees on a northern slope of CCSF's campus. Other activities include being an S.F. Schools Volunteer and Community Organizer.
She is also a published fiction writer, whose works include: "Someone in the Neighborhood," Ms. Magazine, Aug 1986; "Prima Donna", Other Voices, vol. 2, #6/7, F'87; "At Birth", Fiction, vol. 9, #3, F'90; "Collect Calls", Fiction, vol. 11, #1, S'92; "Our Last Flight", Painted Hills, #4, F '91; "On the Alameda", Seventeen, September '92; "Born Again", Painted Hills, #5, W '92; "Imposters", Painted Hills, #9, S'93; "Devil's Slide", Sequoia, vol. 34/35, F'93; "Safe", Bamboo Ridge, #69, S'96; and "Dryspell," Bamboo Ridge, #73, S '98.

Ana Wu English as a Second Language (ESL) Department B. Sc. in Chemistry, University of São Paulo, Brazil |
Ana Wu, a Taiwanese Brazilian born in Bahia, has been teaching at City College of San Francisco since 2001.
As a non-native speaker of English who came to the USA with a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry to get a master’s degree in TESOL, she states, “Without the intention of sounding arrogant, I have to say that non-native English speaking educators are truly role models of learning English successfully. In my classes, I try to show my students their strengths and the richness they carry from growing in multi-lingual communities, by promoting language learning from drawing on their backgrounds. I sincerely hope that one day, they will end up teaching at CCSF or in any community college with a large diverse population, because they just have so much to contribute.”
As an active member of TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), Ms.Wu has given presentations and written articles on using technology in the classroom, developing more appropriate strategies for generation 1.5 writers, and non-native English speaking educators’ issues.
Besides teaching, Ms. Wu enjoys being a certified IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) - a tax trained community volunteer during the months of February-April, helping families who speak Spanish, Portuguese, Mandarin and Japanese.
She is an active member of TESOL, having created two websites (http://nnest.asu.edu and http://www.ccsf.edu/eslcall) and a blog (http://nnest.asu.edu/blog/).
One of her hobbies is choir singing, with three semesters at the San Francisco State University Chamber Choir, conducted by Joshua Habermann. She was a chorist of the CoralUSP (Universidade de São Paulo), performing various "modinhas brasileiras" and cantatas, including Carmina Burana with the Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo.
