Ms. Babin has been a member of the CCSF faculty since 2002.
Since public speaking is the number one fear in America (death is number 2), she hopes to help students reduce their fear and have fun at the same time. It has been said that humor is a major factor of attention in a public speech. "I teach students to feel comfortable using humor in their work to help ease tension."
Ms. Babin is a member of the Western States Communication Association.
Her extracurricular activities include running in marathons, 10K and 12K races, tennis, reading or watching comedy.

Ms. Dewar has been a member of the CCSF faculty since 1991.
Her goal is to teach students how to be the most effective communicators possible. She believes speech is central to rewarding personal, social and workplace relationships. Through role-playing, speeches, group work and class discussion along with research and writing assignments, students work to become the successful communicators of our future!
Ms. Dewar is a member of the CCSF Graduation Committee; Director of Forensics for the Speech and Debate Team; Speech Communication Coordinator; English Department Personnel Committee; Right to Succed Facilitator and DACUM Facilitator. She also is a member of the National Communication Association, Phi Rho Pi Honor Society and Western State Communication Assocation.
In her leisure time, she enjoys traveling, photography and gardening.

Ms. Dvorson has been a member of the CCSF faculty since 1980.
She states: "I believe that today's increased focus on technology and decreased emphasis on human interaction deprive many students of the opportunity to express themselves effectively. Through a supportive classroom environment, my students develop increased self-confidence as their communication skills improve. It is rewarding to know that these skills will impact every aspect of their lives."
Ms. Dvorson is involved in the CCSF Writing Lab and the Speech Department Committee to revise course outlines and develop new courses.
She is a member of the Speech Arts Association of California; dramatic reading participation.
Her extracurricular activities include tap dancing, politics, tennis, journalism and travel.

Janene Frahm English Department/Speech Communication B.A. in Business Education, M.A. in Communication, both from Michigan State University |
Ms. Frahm has been a member of the CCSF faculty for the past 19 years.
Her educational goal is to create a safe environment conducive to learning in which students can face speech anxiety and decrease it through practice. Students learn best by doing, so her classes are interactive with the focus on the students rather than on the instructor.
Ms. Frahm is a Precinct Representative for AFT 2121. She is also a flex presenter and on the Part-timers Committee of the Union. In addition, Ms. Frahm provides communication-related classes to organizations.
In her leisure time she enjoys yoga and hiking.

Professor Gorthy has been a member of the CCSF faculty since 2001.
Her educational philosophy is to work hard to provide a safe community that allows for thought to be freely exchanged without fear of racism or other forms of prejudice.
Professor Gorthy is on the Sustainability Committee and is currently chairing a subcommittee to explore a teacher training program on sustainability issues.
Her other memberships include the National Communication Association, Western States Communication Association, Berkeley Oakland Support Services for the Homeless (1997), Women's Choice Clinic (1997) and Phi Pho Pi Honor Society.
In her leisure time, Professor Gorthy enjoys spending time with her two children at the park, and volunteering at her daughter's public school, hiking, traveling, organic gardening, gospel singing, reading and collecting beat poetry.

Professor Kudsi believes that "great speakers are not born, but made. And they make themselves as a result of their passion, creativity and work ethic. The key to overcoming your public speaking anxiety is to: (1) let the nervousness move through you and do not resist it; (2) quiet your negative self-talk; and (3) know you are not alone and you are not the only one who is nervous."

Ms. Tang-Quan has taught at CCSF for the past 26 years.
She believes that everyone can succeed in college if they want to. You've got to show up and do the work! Learning to speak is scary but you've got to feel the fear and do it anyway. You will grow as a person and become more confident. Soon you will look and sound like a professional speaker.
Her goal is to provide a safe, supportive environment for each student. She is there to cheer you on to success.
Ms. Tang-Quan is on the English Department Personnel Committee, Enhanced Self-Study Committee, Learning Communities Coordinator, Staff Development Coordinator, Right to Succeed Facilitator, Tenure Review Committee, New Faculty Orientation, Catalog Editor, Public Relations Director and Concert Lecture Series Coordinator.
Ms. Tang-Quan is also a speech consultant and professional speaker.

Professor Whalen has been teaching at CCSF since 2005.
Her focus has always been on critical thinking and argumentation. She hopes students can see the powerful link between a public voice and social change.
Currently Professor Whalen is the Director of Forensics of the CCSF Speech and Debate Team. She is past president of the Cross Examination Debate Association and the current Treasurer of the Northern California Forenscis Association.
Professor Whalen has research articles and essays appearing in Performing Democracy, The Art of Rhetorical Criticism and in the following journals: Text and Performance Quarterly and Women Studies in Communication.
In her free time she enjoys wine tasting, stand-up comedy, and theatre.

Ms. Wongprasert has been teaching at CCSF since January 2003.
She believes in active learning. "Students are encouraged to get involved in their learning process as they explore, analyze, and evaluate the course materials in and out of class. As Horowitz (1977) puts it, "to educate is not just to pour in materials for students to learn; by definition, education means developing the latent powers of students." By means of active learning, students are empowered, analytical, rational, and resourceful."
She is an active member of the Communication Apprehension and Avoidance Division of NCA (National Communication Association) and served as Division Chair in 2003. Ms. Wongprasert's journal publications focus on communication apprehension, its effects in various settings, and available interventions. She is also co-editing a book, "Avoiding Communication (3rd ed.)" with five top scholars in the Communication field.
