I am particularly interested in helping students develop cross application digital literacy. By providing a clear conceptual overview followed by step-by-step instruction and materials, I help students develop a strong foundation in digital media production essentials.

To augment this process, I often create instructional materials on the spot, first showing, then typing up the words that convey what was just demonstrated. This is extremely difficult to do but well worth the effort because it offers students a critical bridge between the language they hear, the language they need to repeat to themselves, and the actions associated with the language.

Finally, I emphasize problem solving. I think it is vital that students learn how to figure things out using online resources, experimentation and common sense. Most students will not have the luxury of being in an instructor-led environment all of the time. I speak to that reality and encourage their discovery and research skills from the very first class.

"Crossover: How Artists Build Careers across Commercial, Nonprofit and Community Work." by Ann Markusen, Professor of Planning & Public Policy. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, University of Minnesota. 2006

I am a musician and electronic music producer working on experimental roots music, sound art and electronica.

I love making dance music and atmospheric soundtracks that weave together acoustically and digitally generated sounds. I incorporate everything from simple chanting and body rhythm to street noises and digitally synthesized sound.

I studied blues piano at The Community Music Center in San Francisco and privately with Aaron Blumenfeld 2009 - present. I am currently studying fiddle and folk music with violinist, composer, and music educator Kaila Flexer.

As an instrument maker, I am interested in exploring how common materials like cardboard, plastic, tin and wire can create and amplify sound. I like the idea that tuning systems do not have to be fixed and that the instruments I make may change over time.

As a digital explorer, I am curious about how acoustically generated sound can be merged with digitally composed audio. What happens when physical three dimensional elements come into contact with digital tools and tactics? Can the old and the new play well together? If so, how?

My compositional approach incorporates elements that range from simple chanting and body rhythm to field recordings and turntablist iPad apps.

I am particularly inspired by rural black folk music which includes laments, ballads, work songs and spirituals.

Examples of my work can be found online at marilynm.org and youtube.com/user/rootsmusic76/videos and https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4NNRFJj1Pgl_XIsm93LAAA
