photo of McNeal Marilyn M

Marilyn M McNeal

Business Department

M.A. Media Studies, New School University, New York
B.A. English Literature / Latin, Cum Laude, University Scholar University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Professor McNeal has been teaching at CCSF since 2004.

She is particularly interested in helping students develop cross application digital literacy. By providing a clear conceptual overview followed by step-by-step instruction and materials, she helps students develop a strong foundation in digital media production essentials.

To augment this process, she often creates instructional materials on the spot, first showing, then typing up the words that convey what was just demonstrated. This is extremely difficult to do but well worth the effort because it offers students a critical bridge between the language they hear, the language they need to repeat to themselves, and the actions associated with the language.

Finally, Professor McNeal emphasizes problem solving. She thinks it is vital that students learn how to figure things out using online resources, experimentation and common sense. Most students will not have the luxury of being in an instructor-led environment all of the time. She speaks to that reality and encourages their discovery and research skills from the very first class.

APPLICATION KNOWLEDGE

Graphic Design & Desktop Publishing: Photoshop, InDesign, Publisher
Web Production: HTML, Fundamentals of Web Design, DreamWeaver

LECTURES: Alternative Lecture Series @ San Francisco Art Institute - Graduate Center
Social Media & the Alternative Narrative May 2007.

PUBLICATIONS: "Crossover: How Artists Build Careers across Commercial, Nonprofit and Community Work." by Ann Markusen, Professor of Planning & Public Policy. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, University of Minnesota. 2006.

GROUP SHOWS: April 2007 - 'be honest' - million fishes art collective; January 2007 - mapp retrospective - mission cultural center for latino arts; October 2006 - 'i follow a terrible profession' -
million fishes art collective; April 2006 - 'empirical nostalgia' -million fishes art collective.

As a multimedia artist, Professor McNeal likes creating and layering analog and digital material and is particularly interested in how these separate sources imitate and compete with each other within a piece and in general. Until now, this exploration has mostly occurred through sound design and flash animation.

Recently, she has been making mixed media images using black and white film photography, pencil and ink drawings, screen prints, and Photoshop. She loves working with film, manual cameras, silkscreen, wood, paper, and ink. Just working with hand held tools and materials makes things feel simple and immediate. The April 2007 show at Million Fishes gave her a concrete venue for displaying some work - she was able to present four pieces for the show. The experience was an introduction to many new tools and techniques and has left her excited to keep exploring and making new work.

Professor McNeal still enjoys working with digital media and has started a new web-based project that will house her animation, illustration, audio and video pieces. The project is called Imaginopedia and uses the open source MediaWiki platform developed by the people behind Wikipedia.

Part personal art context and part public (and completely editable) site for anyone's work, Imaginopedia is an online encyclopedia that encourages users to collaboratively create an alternative set of "facts" based on the imagination. Imaginopedia gives her a way to explore what it means to represent / depict things through text and images while promoting the imagination and intuition as alternative sources of truth.

Currently, Imaginopedia is open to the public. Anyone can create an account and start adding / editing content. In May 2008, Professor McNeal will invite artists to submit their work for inclusion and collaboration with other artists.

Prof. Mullen has been teaching at CCSF since 2001. Prof. Mullen is a former IRS auditor with over 14 years experience in conducting financial investigations, money laundering, abusive tax avoidance schemes and income tax evasion. Prof. Mullen also worked for the Nevada Department of Taxation conducting sales and use tax audits. Prof. Mullen is the Faculty Advisor for the Business Honors Club, Alpha Beta Gamma (ABG), as well as an Honors Professor for Accounting 2, Managerial Accounting. In 2010, Prof. Mullen started the IRS VITA income tax preparation site on the Ocean campus run by members of the ABG Honors Club.

I believe in teaching both the theory and the practice of accounting. I try to make students aware of what they will encounter in their first jobs in the field of accounting. I try to teach them how to deal with the ethical issues and concerns they will face on the job by presenting and discussing these issues in class along with the normal daily lecture and problem solving.

Since we live and work in a global environment, I incorporate basic accounting concepts and business phrases in various languages so that they will not feel intimidated or uncomfortable when conducting global business transactions for the first time. I encourage students to ask questions in class and via email to facilitate the discussion process but also to prepare them for dealing with future clients.

Boards and Committees: Treasurer, Glen Park Association SF, (2001-current); Treasurer, Friends of Glen Canyon Park, SF (2001 - current); Audit Committee, LINES Contemporary Ballet, SF (2004 - current); Chair, Isadora Duncan Dance Awards, SF (2004-2009, 2011-current); Santa Clara Ballet Association (1988 - current); Business Director, Classical Dance Alliance, New York City, (2002 - current); Advisory Board Member, LEGACY Oral History Program, SF Museum of Performance and Design (formerly the San Francisco Performing Arts Library and Museum), (1988 - current); English Editor, Ballet Art, St. Petersburg, Russia, (1999 - current), CCSF Honors Committee, (2009 - current), CCSF Academic Policies Committee, (2011 - current).

Publications: Six LEGACY oral histories on dance published and in the permanent collection of the San Francisco Museum of Peformance and Design (formerly the San Francisco Performing Arts Library and Museum); Ballet Art magazine, St. Petersburg, Russia. Languages spoken: French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, and some Mandarin Chinese.

I enjoy reading the history of taxation and international monetary theory. I follow the Euro Zone and world market activities in order to observe how currency and bond markets behave in these uncertain times. I also enjoy reading European political history as well as the history of performing arts (especially opera and ballet) in France, Germany, Austria, Italy, and Russia. I attend regularly the opera and ballet both here in San Francisco, as well as in Paris, Vienna, Munich, St. Petersburg and Moscow, Russia.
