Ms. Mitchell has been a teacher and counselor at CCSF since 1982. She is a National Certified Counselor and hold a Doctorate in Counseling Psychology with an emphasis in career selection and change from the University of San Francisco, a Masters in Counseling Psychology from Santa Clara University, and a Masters in Adult Career Development from John F. Kennedy University.
Additionally, she holds a Community College Credential, California Secondary Teaching Credential, and a Pupil Personnel Services Credential.
Students have many questions about their college major and their career options. They are often pressured by family, friends, and professionals to declare a major. In response to this stress, students often choose a major or career direction before they have had a chance to explore even one option. Her philosophy is that majors are chosen and careers are launched as a result of taking action on one's curiosity. Her goals are to help students to clarify their areas of curiosity and to provide guidance and support to them as they begin to explore their curiosity and interests.
Along with her CDPC colleagues, Ms. Mitchell helped to develop the Career Readiness Survey that is completed by new students to help them with major and career questions by referring them to career classes and services.
She has served as Department Chair of the Career Counseling Department and as the project manager of Contract Education, a program that provides educational and career courses at San Francisco corporate sites. Ms. Mitchell also is currently a member of the Basic Skills Committee and the Student Development Learning Outcomes Committee.
