Ana Wu, a Taiwanese Brazilian born in Bahia, has been teaching at City College of San Francisco since 2001.

As a non-native speaker of English who came to the USA with a bachelor's degree in Chemistry to get a master's degree in TESOL, she tries to show her students their strengths and the richness they carry from growing in multilingual communities, by promoting language learning from drawing on their backgrounds. She sincerely hopes that one day, they will end up teaching at CCSF or in any community college with a large diverse population.

As an active member of TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), she has given presentations and written articles on using technology in the classroom, developing more appropriate strategies for generation 1.5 writers, and non-native English speaking educators’ issues.

Besides teaching, she enjoys being a certified IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) - a tax trained community volunteer during the months of February-April, helping families who speak Spanish, Portuguese, Mandarin and Japanese.

She is an active member of TESOL, having created two websites ( and and a blog (

One of her hobbies is choir singing, with three semesters at the San Francisco State University Chamber Choir, conducted by Joshua Habermann. She was a chorist of the CoralUSP (Universidade de São Paulo), performing various "modinhas brasileiras" and cantatas, including Carmina Burana with the Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo
