Darrel Hess has been teaching Geography at City College since 1990. He served as Chair of the Earth Sciences Department from Fall 1995 through Spring 2009.

After completing an undergraduate degree in Geography at U.C. Berkeley in 1978, Mr. Hess served for two years as a teacher in the Peace Corps on the Korean island of Jeju-do. After the Peace Corps, he worked as a photographer and educational audiovisual producer. In 1990 he completed a graduate degree in the Department of Geography at UCLA.

Mr. Hess is author of the Pearson textbooks, MCKNIGHT'S PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY: A LANDSCAPE APPRECIATION and PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY LABORATORY MANUAL, both now in their 11th editions, as well as the THIRD CALIFORNIA EDITION of MCKNIGHT'S PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY. He began working with senior author Tom McKnight on the 6th edition of the textbook, and took over full responsibility for the books with the 9th edition.

In his leisure time, Mr. Hess enjoys photography, hiking, camping, and scuba diving. He and his wife live in the East Bay.
