B.S., Portland State University, Oregon; M.Ed., University of Oregon, Eugene; M.A., San Francisco State University

Janet Lohr has been teaching at CCSF since 1975.

Both as an artist and as a teacher helping students to develop their expressive powers, Janet has had a long career in clay. She encourages a playful approach, while at the same time grounding her students in good technique that will enable them to realize their ideas as successful projects. No matter what a student's level, there is always more to learn, and Janet enjoys guiding all students to improve and strengthen their work.

Her ceramic studies began at Portland State University in 1967, continued at University of Oregon and San Francisco State, and are still going on in the present day, as she is always trying something new, and often takes workshops with well known ceramic artists. In 1985 she studied ceramics in Japan with Masakazu Yamada. She has done extensive research into many folk traditions, particularly those of Ancient America.

Janet takes pride in the impressive accomplishments of many of her past students who have gone on to make careers in ceramics. She is also very proud of the quality of work that she can bring out in beginners.

A garden designer on non-teaching days, Janet also enjoys singing and occasionally performs at coffee houses in San Francisco.
