My philosophy is to treat the formal educational moment, the class, as an in-focus snapshot of a longer movie—and what is important to me is that students feel a connection to me that carries them along as long as they need my support.

It is a pity that School, and Schooling, has been seen as a competitive enterprise. That ruins the fun, doesn't it? . Instead, I strive to create an environment, collaboratively with students, where everyone feels the cooperative spirit, and each of our individual triumphs is a mark, at least in part, of our ability to rejoice in one another's progress and evolution as engaged human beings.

In 1A and 96 English classes, I often use texts having to do with the economy, mass incarceration, problem solving, and media literacy.

I also try to incorporate poetry, short novels, and stories, whenever possible.

I have an urban homestead in East Oakland: a couple of Chickens, a small orchard of peaches, nectarines, cara cara oranges, apricots, almonds, lemons, and limes-- and big plans for building a small writing studio next year! I am approaching a zero waste recycling system in my home.
