Your personal network drive
The CCSF Windows Network connects all Faculty and Staff Windows computers on all networked campuses.
- After you log on to the CCSF network on any Faculty/Staff computer inside the CCSF network, your personal network drive is available in My Computer.
- Named with your login name and with the letter H: it holds 100 Megabytes (MB)—about as much space as 70 floppy disks.
- Use the network drive to save or backup documents, pictures—anything you want.
- It is a private space. Only you can access the files and folders on this space. Your login and password protect this area from others. Of course, the network administrator has access to the entire network for administrative tasks such as backup.
- Your network space is not available on the Web or from home. Just inside the CCSF network.
Using your network (H:) drive
Saving from Word/Excel/PowerPoint: From the menu bar, click File > Save As and choose the H drive. Now you will to be able to access the document from other locations inside the CCSF network.
A line in My Computer identifies your personal space. It's identified by your user name (here it's jdoe).
Some departments may also have another network space in My Computer that department members can share.
- Turn off or Log off your computer when out of your office to protect your documents.
- Pay attention to your storage space. When you reach 100 Megabytes, you can’t save any more stuff. To check available space, open My Computer, right-click your network drive and click Properties.
- Clean up your personal network drive by deleting/backing up documents on it as they fall out of use so that you don’t run out of space.
- If you regularly need to use more than 100 MB, save sections of your work somewhere else on your hard disk and back it up yourself. See the documents in the Windows software pages to guide you through organizing, moving and copying your folders and files.
- Log in to a Faculty/staff computer connected to the new network (any rollout computer).
- Open My Computer
- Double-click to open the drive whose entry starts with your login name.
- Double-click to open documents on this network drive just as you would on your floppy, hard disk or Zip.
- Create as many folders as you like on your network drive.
- Open a document from a program like Word or Excel by clicking File > Open. Then click the down-arrow to the right of the Look In: box to see locations. Click your network H: drive or any other network drive icon you may have to see its documents.
Save a document from a program like Word or Excel by clicking File > Save or File > Save As. Then click the down-arrow to the right of the Look In: box to see locations. Click H: or any other network space that you may have to save there.
