CCSF Passwords: Tips

Changing your Windows network password

When logging into your computer for the first time, prompts guide you through entering a new password immediately.

To change your computer password any other time:

  • Log on
  • Once logged on, press Ctrl-Alt-Del (Hold down the Ctrl and Alt keys and tap the Del or Delete key). A window with many buttons appears.
  • Click the lower left Change Password button
  • Follow the prompts: you'll have to enter your new password twice to confirm it.
  • If you make a typing mistake or don't follow the rules, you'll be asked to start over.

Your new password

  • Must be at least 8 characters long and should contain at least 1 number and 2 letters
  • No spaces or special characters
  • Is case-sensitive: you must enter CAPITALS and small letters the same way each time
  • Can't repeat any of your last 3 passwords

Use your login and your new password.

Passwords and Sanity

Nowadays we all have to deal with multiple passwords: for ATMs, online business, getting employee or student information, you name it.

Entering the wrong password

And some of them (like our CCSF Network password) must change regularly, often twice a year

I cope by developing a short list of passwords. It used to be three, but has ballooned to six, because my bank requires all digits. When I add a new one, I send an email to myself and store it in a folder called pwd.

Now, when a password doesn't work, or when I am forced to change, I have a limited number to choose from—and usually it turns out to be the second or third choice.
