Biography
Agathe Bennich was born in Sweden and went to boarding school in
England. She lived in France for two years and Austria and Italy
half a year each in order to acquire languages.
Agathe started her studies at the San Francisco Art Institute in
1966 and received the B.F.A. in 1969 and the M.F.A. in 1972. Her
teaching started as a teacher's assistant while in school, as well
as teaching at the YWCA. Since then she taught studio classes in
painting, figure drawing, drawing and design at the College of Marin,
San Francisco Art Institute, and University of Hawaii.
Agathe started teaching "Modern Art History" in 1988.
In 1991 she developed a new course for City College, "Women
through Art History". There was an interest, as well as a great
deal of information coming into this field, as feminists as well
as male historians were researching and putting forth books and
papers re-evaluating women's exclusion.
When not teaching, most of the time is spent in the studio. Every
year there is a trip back to Europe to see archeological sites,
painting, and sculpture, as well as many family members. Her son
lives in Italy making instruments, cellos and violins, a good reason
to visit.
