NATIONAL SECURITY EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP
(NSEP) BOREN AWARDS
http://www.borenawards.org/
Program Overview:
NSEP was designed to provide American undergraduates with
the resources and encouragement they need to acquire skills and
experience in countries and areas of the world critical to the future
security of our nation. NSEP was established by the National Security
Education Act of 1991, which created the National Security Education
Board, the National Security Education Program, and a trust fund
in the U.S. Treasury to provide resources for scholarships, fellowships
and grants.
NSEP Boren scholarships can be applied to study abroad in all countries,
except Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Preference
will be given to applications for study in areas deemed critical
to national security.
Each year, NSEP publishes a list of geographic areas, languages,
and fields of study identified as critical to U.S. national security.
Eligibility:
As a U.S. undergraduate
student, you are eligible to apply for an NSEP Boren scholarship
if you meet the following conditions:
1. U.S. citizenship at the time of application.
2. Matriculated as a freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior in a
U.S. post-secondary institution, including universities, colleges,
and community colleges accredited by an accrediting body recognized
by the U.S. Department of Education. A high school graduate or have
earned a GED.
3. Applying to engage in a study abroad experience that meets home
institution standards.
4. Planning to use the scholarship for study abroad: NSEP undergraduate
scholarships are not for study in the United States.
5. Your study abroad program ends before you graduate.
To learn more about eligibility requirements and how to apply
for the NSEP scholarship, please visit http://www.iie.org/nsep/applic.htm.
Award:
The amount of an NSEP Boren scholarship award is based on
financial need, as certified by your institution's financial aid
office. The amount will vary from the cost of participation in a
proposed study abroad program, to partial support. The maximum scholarship
award for any one academic term in a study abroad program will be
about $10,000 or $20,000 for an academic year. The minimum award
will be $2,500 for summer, $4,000 for one semester or $6,000 for
an academic year.
For students participating in individually-arranged programs, the
amount of the award will be based on host country cost of living,
tuition (if any), travel, books, settling-in costs, and appropriate
insurance. These costs will be determined by IIE/NSEP. When you
select your study abroad program, you should be realistic about
your ability to fund part of your program should you receive an
award which does not cover full program expenses.
CCSF Faculty member Sue Light assists students with the NSEP application
process. If you are interested in applying, please call Sue Light
at 415/239-3792 or email: lauralight@juno.com.
Brochures and applications are available on the Phelan Campus (50
Phelan Avenue) in A301 or C212.
NOTE: This is a national competition, so you need at least a 3.4
GPA and you must be a U.S. citizen.
Additionally, you can visit: http://www.borenawards.org/the_language_flagship to learn about The Language Flagship Fellowships, which offer a limited number of fellowships to qualified American students interested in receiving full financial support to participate in one of the Flagship Programs in Arabic, Central Asian Turkic languages, Korean, Mandarin, Persian, and Russian.
