THE ACADEMIC CURRICULUM
Note: All participants must enroll in one of the following courses
during the pre-departure orientation held in San Francisco approximately one month prior to departure for Mexico. Students
will take a placement test upon arrival in Oaxaca, which will determine
their class level at the Instituto Cultural Oaxaca.
Beginning Conversational Spanish - Spanish
10A
First-semester course. Intensive oral practice of basic structures
and vocabulary most often used in conversation. Designed for students
who wish to acquire basic skills of spoken Spanish. CSU. 3 units.
Continuation of Beginning Conversational
Spanish - Spanish 10B
Second-semester course. Extensive oral practice of basic structures
and vocabulary most often used in conversation. Designed for students
who wish to acquire basic skills of spoken Spanish. CSU. 3 units.
Intermediate Conversational Spanish -
Spanish 10C
Third-semester course. Extensive oral practice of basic structures
and vocabulary most often used in conversation. Designed for students
who wish to acquire more advanced skills of spoken Spanish. CSU.
3 units.
Continuation of Intermediate Conversational
Spanish - Spanish 10D
Fourth-semester course. Extensive oral practice of basic structures
and vocabulary most often used in conversation. Designed for students
who wish to enhance existing skills in spoken Spanish. CSU. 3 units.
Introduction to Literature in Spanish
- Spanish 4
Reading of literature and cultural selections; composition; review
of selected grammar. CSU/UC. 3 units.
All courses are transferable to the CSU system.
Spanish 4 is also transferable to the UC system.
Important Note: Courses offered are subject
to change.
ELIGIBILITY AND TRANSFERABILITY
It is recommended that you discuss your participation in the Oaxaca
program with the staff of the CCSF Study Abroad Office prior to
application. For an appointment, call 415/239-3778. Attendance at
a pre-departure orientation meeting is mandatory. An on-site orientation
will be given in Mexico. Out-of-state students and others not living
in California are encouraged to complete counseling and orientation
by telephone and mail correspondence.
PROGRAM FACULTY
In Summer of 2009, the group will be accompanied by Sharyn Kuusisto,
a member of the CCSF Spanish Faculty. Sharyn has taken numerous
groups of students to Oaxaca over the last fifteeen years and is an expert on the city of Oaxaca.
Professor Kuusisto also accompanied a group of CCSF students to Antigua, Guatemala during the Summer of 2007.
In Summer of 2008, the group was accompanied by Ed Stering, a
member of the CCSF Spanish Faculty for more than 20 years. (That's Ed's smiling
face, below.) Ed will next lead the group to Oaxaca durng Summer 2010. He also led the Summer 2002, 2004 and 2006 programs in Oaxaca for CCSF. Ed previously lived in Mexico City for three years. He is available for student
