Make this summer an unforgettable one by studying and travelling in China along the legendary "Silk Road" with City College of San Francisco.
Our journey will begin on July 22nd, when we board our plane in San Francisco and fly to Shanghai, China's largest and most modern city. Once in Shanghai, we will spend a few days exploring the city's sights, and take a river cruise. From there we fly to Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous region, the most landlocked city on earth. From Urumqi we fly to Turfan, where we will visit Buddhist caves and Bezeklik Grottoes, the Imin Minaret and the Uyghur bazaar. In the evening the group will be treated to a Uyghur singing and dancing performance.
After two nights in Turfan we will board an overnight train that takes us to Dunhuang, where the Silk Road split into northern and southern routes. We will explore Dunhuang, including Yangguan (The South Pass), and Yumenguan (The Jade Gate Pass), which is located at the western end of the Great Wall. We will also visit the Magao Grottoes, which houses the finest treasury of Buddhist mural art in the world.
After two nights in Dunhuang we will fly to Xi'an, the ancient capital of 11 dynasties and the eastern terminus of the ancient Silk Road. Here we will witness one of the greatest archeological wonders of the world: the spectacular terra cotta warriors. After several days exploring the Yangling and Tang Tombs, the Xi'an Mosque and several local museums, we will board an overnight train to Beijing.
In Beijing the group will tour through the classic hutongs (small alleyways usually flanked by the gates and walls of traditional courtyard houses), visit the Capital Museum, the restored Confucian Temple and enjoy an evening farewell Peking Duck dinner before boarding our flight the following day to return to San Francisco.
Lectures and discussions will be in English and will take place
at museums, monuments, rural villages, temples and other sites.
