DEPARTMENT OF RADIOLOGIC SCIENCES
RADIATION ONCOLOGY TECHNOLOGY Program

Radiation OncologyTechnology Program Information Packet and Application
Also known as Radiation Therapy, Radiation Oncology is the controlled use of high-energy radiation to treat cancer and tumors. The radiation destroys the cancer cells' ability to reproduce, and the body naturally disposes of these cells. Radiation may be used to cure a cancer, or to relieve a cancer patient's pain.
After completing the training program of 2 years + 3 months at City College of San Francisco, and then passing the licensing exam, a graduate can expect a starting salary of $60,000 at hospitals in the Bay Area.
The Career. The Radiation Therapist operates various types of equipment using ionizing radiation sources to provide treatment for patients with cancer and other malignant diseases. For each patient, the physician and medical physicist prepare a treatment plan. The Radiation Therapist is part of the team responsible for the delivery of the prescribed treatment, and also offers psychological support to the patient.
Work Environment. Radiation Therapists work in hospitals and cancer centers. The job is typically full-time, during the day.
