Spring 2008 Diagnostic Medical Imaging Program Newsletter
Diagnostic Radiologic Technology is a science combining advanced technology and human compassion. Formerly known as X-ray Technology, Diagnostic Medical Imaging (DMI) includes techniques such as ultrasound, angiography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and computerized tomography (CT), as well as Radiography. Technologists use their knowledge of physics, human anatomy and physiology to create permanent medical images. The Radiologic Sciences Department at City College of San Francisco is proud to offer state-of-the-art facilities with new classrooms and laboratory equipment, along with highly respected instructors who are current in the field. Internship takes place at our affiliate hospitals in the Bay Area.
There is currently a nationwide shortage of Radiologic Technologists, and job prospects are excellent. After completing the 2-1/2 year training program at City College of San Francisco and passing the licensing exam, a graduate can expect a starting salary of $ 60,000 per year at hospitals in the Bay Area.
The Career Diagnostic Radiologic Technologists, also known as Radiographers or X-ray technologists, use X-ray equipment to help diagnose and treat various health problems. Responsibilities include patient care during the X-ray examination, positioning the patient, setting and operating controls on the X-ray machines. A Radiographer may advance to one of the specialities, to management, or to equipment sales. Besides full-time positions, there are often opportunities for part-time and on-call work.
Work Environment Most Radiographers work in hospitals, outpatient clinics, and private offices. Some work as a member of a health care team, others work alone, and in many cases the patient will be seen only by the Radiographer. Work can be physically demanding, requiring a lot of standing and walking, the moving and lifting of equipment, as well as the lifting of patients. Besides full-time positions, there are often opportunities for part-time and on-call work.
Personal Characteristics A prospective student should have:
a desire to work with ill and disabled people, as well
as with other health professionals
an ability to do precise work accurately an interest in operating machinery and equipment an interest in science good physical and mental health
