faculty, staff and students regarding assaults.
Within the past 3 weeks there have been incidents of crimes
against women on the Ocean Campus and the immediate area.
Reducing Your Risk of Becoming a Victim
-
Be aware of your surroundings. Being cautious
and alert can only be to your benefit. If you see any
suspicious activity or person(s) call the Campus Police
at once.
-
If possible, don’t walk alone during night or early
morning hours. Walk in groups whenever you can,
there is always safety in numbers. Stay in well-lit
areas as much as possible.
-
Stay away from isolated areas, day or night.
Always walk briskly; look alert and confident, avoid
carrying objects requiring use of both arms. Don’t
stop to talk to strangers. Avoid shrubbery or doorways
that might hide an attacker.
-
If you are being followed, get away fast, change
directions, and walk or run to a crowded area. If
you are walking alone, try to have a whistle with you,
blow the whistle to attract attention for help.
-
Dress comfortably. Wear
clothing and shoes that give you freedom of movement.
If you are wearing headphones don’t turn up the volume
so high that you cannot hear outside noises.
-
Trust your instincts. If something or someone
makes you uneasy avoid the person or leave. Know the
neighborhoods where you live and work. Check out the
locations of police and fire stations, public
telephones, hospitals, and restaurants, or stores that
are open late.

Crime Alert issued 09-07-2004
There has been a rash of counterfeit $20.00 bills being passed around to campus vendors. Students, employees beware of the following so you do not become a victim:
- Most of the bills involved are the "New Style" (Series 2004) $20 Bills
- They look very realistic, but the paper has a "waxy" feel
- The thin black vertical watermark the reads "USA Twenty USA Twenty" present on a genuine $20, but it's not present on the counterfeit
- Look at the money you receive. Compare a suspect bill of the same type and denomination with a real one. Look at the paper and quality of printing. Look for differences, not similarities
The genuine portrait appears lifelike and stands out distinctly from the background. The counterfeit portrait is usually lifeless and flat. Details merge into the background which is often too dark or mottled.
On a genuine bill, the saw-tooth points of the Federal Reserve and Treasury seals are clear, distinct, and sharp. The counterfeit seals may have uneven, blunt, or broken saw-tooth points.
The fine lines in the border of a genuine bill are clear and unbroken. On the counterfeit, the lines in the outer margin and scrollwork may be blurred and indistinct.
Genuine serial numbers have a distinctive style and are evenly spaced. The serial numbers are printed in the same ink color as the Treasury Seal. On a counterfeit, the serial numbers may differ in color or shade of ink from the Treasury seal. The numbers may not be uniformly spaced or aligned.
Genuine currency paper has tiny red and blue fibers embedded throughout. Often counterfeiters try to simulate these fibers by printing tiny red and blue lines on their paper. Close inspection reveals, however, that on the counterfeit note the lines are printed on the surface, not embedded in the paper. It is illegal to reproduce the distinctive paper used in the manufacturing of United States currency.
IF YOU RECEIVE ANY OF THESE BILLS OR ARE SUSPICIOUS OF ANY BILL RECEIVED, PLEASE CALL THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE POLICE AT (415) 239-3200
