SAN FRANCISCO — If you attend any home football games this fall at the City College of San Francisco, you might be pleasantly surprised to find a full-page Coast Guard Reserve recruiting ad on the back of the school’s football program. Last year, the Rams were named national junior college champions last year with a perfect 12-0 record, the ad on the back cover of their program belonged to the Coast Guard Reserve — Jobs That Matter!
How did that come about? In the spring of 1998, recruiters from the San Francisco office, SK1 Enemias Rocha, Sr. and reservist BMC Michael T. Uland met with Robert Balestreri, CCSF Dean of Admissions and Records, and Dan Hayes, CCSF football offensive coordinator.
"We discussed how to increase our presence on campus and decided on an ad in the football program," said Uland. "We were too late to secure funds for the fall 1998 program, but secured funds for the fall 1999 program."
This fall, the Coast Guard Reserve ad will again occupy the back cover of the CCSF football program — two great teams working together.
Perhaps head coach George Rush, who has led CCSF to a 102-11 record during the 1990s summed it up best. "U.S. History is my favorite subject," said Rush. "I have always admired the Coast Guard for its contribution to our country. I am honored to have their ad on the back cover of our program."
