FAQS:  Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a partner?

No. In class, we will frequently rotate partners. At the milongas (tango parties), you will meet many people with whom you may dance.

Which level would be best for me?

  • Beginning and Latin American Social & Folk – No experience necessary.
  • Intermediate – Assumes prior experience with Argentine Tango basics, forward and back ochos/ exposure to vals and milonga.
  • Advanced – Assumes prior experience with Argentine Tango basics, forward and back ochos, some turns/ exposure to vals and milonga.
  • Choreography & Performance – Assumes prior experience with Argentine Tango at the Intermediate/Advanced level.

I have experience with American and/or International Style Tango but have never studied Argentine Tango. Do I need to take Beginning?

Yes. I strongly recommend that you take Beginning to develop a strong base in Argentine Tango.

I will need to miss several classes over the course of the semester. Should I still enroll?

If you are very interested in Argentine Tango, and you are committed to doing some makeup work, then I would advise you to enroll, request the Credit/No Credit grading option by the appropriate deadline, and arrange to do makeups for the classes you will miss.

Should I dress to move on the first day of class?

Yes. Wear clothing that allows your leg and footwork to be seen, that is comfortable and not constrictive. Wear shoes that stay securely on your feet, have smooth soles, and allow you to pivot on a wood floor with ease.

I need dance shoes and/or practice music. What do you recommend?

In the Beginning class, I do a thorough segment on each of these topics in the early part of the semester. Plan to attend!
