Placement Testing in Chinese
Taiwan flag

Students with previous background in the study of Chinese (in high school, another school or college, etc.) may take a placement test in Chinese.  The tests results will help to place you in an appropriate course level. Based on the test results and after consultation with the test advisor, the student may sign up to earn extra units based on previous study. Thus, if you had, for example, two years of high school Chinese with good grades, you take the placement test and talk to the advisor. If the test and advisor recommend you enroll in Chinese 2 (for example), you take that course and upon completion of Chinese 2 with a grade of A or B, City College will award you units for both Chinese 1 and 2 (five units per course for a total of ten units). If you take 2B as a result of the test, you will be awarded 2A course credit (three units per course for a total of six units). The extra units, however, will not earn a letter grade. There is no charge to the student for the additional units. At this time, the units awarded only apply to the following classes:

Chinese 1, 1A, 1B Chinese 2, 2A, 2B

Chinese 3, 3A, 3B Chinese 4, 4A, 4B

Here are some specifics on taking the test:

1.

You may take the placement test at the Language Center in the Rosenberg Library (R205) on the dates as follow:

or at the end of the Spring 2008 Semester, to better evaluate which course you will want to take for Fall 2008:

Friday, May 2, 2008 from 2:00-4:00

Saturday, May 3, 2008 from 9:00-11:00

If you think that you do not need the full two hours to complete the test, you can come in at any time during the scheduled time.  However, you want to make sure that you can finish the test by 4 p.m.

2.

You must present a photo ID in order to take the placement test.  You also need at #2 pencil to mark the test answer sheet.

3.

After the test, you should hand in the answer sheet (Scantron) along with the test paper unmarked to the person administering the test.  Test papers may not be taken out of the Language Center at any time, for any reason.

4.

After three working days, you should check with the test advisor (in most cases, your instructor:  Chih-yih Cheng, Doris Chun, Winnie Leong, Sue Lian, Rita Wang, Wen-yee Wong, Grace Yu) for test results and consultation.

You will need to complete the form of Contract for Credit for Previous Study of Chinese so that we know you want us to grant you the credit for previous study upon completion of your CCSF Chinese course.  The CCSF Foreign Language Department thanks the Language Center and the Office of Matriculation for their support in operating this pilot program.
