Rashan KC
Rashan came to San Francisco from his native Nepal in 2000. In Nepal
he was a tour operator, specializing in trekking tours in the Himalayas.
In 2001, he entered City College, as a student in the ESL program. While
studying English he heard about the Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management
Program. He already was working as a waiter at the Alamo Square Grill,
a French bistro, and decided to enroll. He continued at Alamo Square
while studying and eventually became Maitre d' / Manager.
Rashan followed the Culinary Arts and Restaurant Management Tracks,
and did his internship at the Campton Place Hotel. In the summer of 2004,
he spent two weeks in France on one of Mr. Stellman's food and wine tours.
"For me the program was difficult, and it was very competitive. I always
thought in terms of being a Front of the House person, but now I am glad
I had exposure to culinary arts too. I now feel confident in any part
of the operation." I always felt encouraged by the faculty. Their confidence
in me helped me through the program."
In Spring of 2006. Rashan was offered an interest in the Metro Cafe
on Divisidero Street. After several months operating as a French Bistro,
the decision was made to reformat the restaurant, and to offer the cuisine
of Nepal, Rashan's native country. After an exhaustive search to find
a Chef competent in Nepalese cuisine, the restaurant was re-christened
the Metro Kathmandu in July 2007. It soon earned a reputation for authentic,
reasonably priced dishes from this corner of the world.
Rashan welcomes all to come by for a drink at the bar, or to sample
some of the traditional Nepalese fare which is attracting a dedicated
following.
