NURSING DEPARTMENT OF REGISTERED NURSING The School of Health proudly offers a two-year program leading to an Associate of Science degree in Nursing. The R.N. program combines general education and specialized nursing coursework to give each student a well-rounded education. The program is specifically designed to make each graduating student eligible to sit for the California State Nursing Licensure Examination. As such, this fully accredited program prepares students to function at the level of R.N. in hospitals, clinics, and health care agencies. Admission to the Registered Nursing program is competitive. Prerequisites include introductory courses in anatomy, physiology, and microbiology, each of which is offered at City College. The School of Health also offers an 18-month Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) program that leads to a Certificate in Vocational Nursing. This full-time program includes lectures, demonstration, participation in patient care conferences, and hands-on clinical practice at San Francisco Hospitals. Our LVN program is fully accredited by the California Board of Vocational Nursing. Graduates of the LVN program who achieve State certification are eligible to work in hospitals, long-term care facilities, clinics, and doctors' offices. Home Health Aide/Nurse Assistant Contemporary society has brought an increase in the use of home-based care. To meet the needs of Bay Area communities, the LVN Department also offers a one-semester program that provides students with the skills, experience and eligibility to take the State certification examinations to become a Certified Nurse Assistant and/or Home Health Aide. Graduates of this program can seek positions in acute care and long-term care facilities, as well as with home care agencies, clinics, and doctor's offices. The program emphasizes hands-on health care procedures and critical thinking concepts while learning relevant nursing, behavioral, and nutritional principles.
