Obiel Leyva
Obiel A. Leyva is a part-time instructor with the Health Education Department. Obiel has taught Health 59, 64, and 90A (Homeless Healthcare Issues). Obiel enjoys working with students and learning from them as much as they learn from each other and the class material. Obiel has extensive public health, community organizing, and health education training and skills which he has used in his work with underserved, low-income communities of color on various health issues (HIV/AIDS, Diabetes, reproductive health, etc.). Obiel has worked in many community health centers in and around the Bay Area (La Clí nica de la Raza, Mission Neighborhood Health Center, Planned Parenthood, and Salud Para la Gente). Understanding the importance of bilingual ability as an immigrant himself from Mexico, Obiel has played and shall continue to play an important leadership role in the creation and delivery of culturally and linguistically competent health care services for Bay Area residents. Obiel received his B.A. from The University of California at Berkeley in 1990 and his Master's Degree in Public Health from The University of California at Los Angeles in 1995.
