Inter-disciplinary collaboration between the CCSF Graphic Communications Department, the Department of Transitional Studies, and the CCSF Rosenberg Library.

Faculty Sponsors: Regina Rowland and Amber Straus
Collaborator: Kate Connell (Library)
Students: Advanced Graphic Communication students and female GED students in San Francisco County Jail

The CJ8 Project—social activism in the forms of book and exhibit design, installation and performance art—became part of a larger poster exhibit called Expose, Exchange, Express. The exhibits faced each other, representing a bridge between resources available to the public and those who have no access to what they need.

The students involved wrote, designed and produced a book of poetry and visuals that were largely created by the female inmates in San Francisco County Jail to tell the stories of their lives, and their lives in jail. The book was published concurrently with the opening of the exhibit, which was also accompanied by a performance that included a CJ8 poetry reading and a movement and sound piece.
