Proximity

Related to the factor of typographic grouping, proximity offers another important variable for exploration. Letters, words, lines, and blocks of text may range from severely overlapping to generously spaced. When typographic elements overlap, legibility is severely reduced or eliminated. What is often gained from this compromise are intriguing typographic shapes created by overlapping letters, or anxious textures established by overlapping lines of type. Personal experimentation will undoubtedly produce surprising and rewarding results.
