Photo: Amy Shimm-Novashen I really wanted to be an embalmer.

I grew up in New York City and studied American civilization at Brown University. I also was a cartoonist for the paper there, and that is where I realized I wanted to be involved in art and design. I have lived in Japan, Denmark and Finland. I received a Masters of Architecture at U.C. Berkeley and worked for a few years in the industry before switching over to graphics. I have done work for Kaiser Permanente, Nike, Clorox. (The other ones are boring!) I've illustrated a few books and LOVE teaching at CCSF.
