COURSES REQUIRED FOR ALL CERTIFICATES AND DEGREES
Introduction to Environmental Horticulture: Survey of environmental horticulture including production of plants and tandscape skills. Emphasis on career opportunities and cultural requirements of plants.
Horticultural Machines: Field and shop operation of common horticultral equipment. Hands-on preventative maintenance and service.
Business Practices: Practical business problems in various branches of environmental horticulture.
Soils: Soil characteristics and managment for landscape, nursery, greenhouse and turf. Amendments, fertilizers, soil-water relationships, organic matter, composting and soil organisms.
Pest Control: Identification and control strategies for common pests of environmental horticulture. Emphasis is on Integrated Pest Management, preparation for qualified applicator's exam.
Fall and Winter Plant Identification: Identification of trees, shrubs, vines and perennials commonly used in Bay Area landscapes. Emphasis on cultural requirements, growth habits, and use.
Spring and Summer Plant Identification: Continuation of Fall and Winter Plant Identification.

COURSES REQUIRED FOR AWARDS OF ACHIEVEMENT IN LANDSCAPE GARDENING AND LANDSCAPE CONTRACTING
Beginning and Advanced Landscape Horticulture: Principles
and practices in landscape maintenance and management. Care of shrubs, trees, turf and perennials.
Beginning and Advanced Landscape Design: General principles of landscape design as applied to small properties. Drafting and illustration techniques used in the preparation of working drawings.
Beginning and Advanced Landscape Construction: Design and construction problems dealing with grading, walls, steps, decks, fences, masonry, and other aspects of landscape construction. Planning, estimating and use of tools and instruments.
Work Experience: Supervised work experience with cooperating employers. Students acquire hands-on experience in horticulture.

COURSES REQUIRED FOR AWARDS OF ACHIEVEMENT IN COMMERCIAL CUT-FLOWER AND GREENHOUSE PRODUCTION
Greenhouse Operations: Production of cut flowers, bedding plants, flowering potted plants and foliage under greenhouse conditions Greenhouse materials, construction and equipment.
Plant Propagation: Plant propagation as commercially practiced in the industry. Propagation by seed, cuttings, layering, division, grafting and micropropagation.
Greenhouse Crops: Production of specific greenhouse crops including poinsettias, lilies, cyclamen, chrysanthemums, perennials, herbs and a variety of specialty crops.

COURSES REQUIRED FOR AWARDS OF ACHIEVEMENT IN NURSERY AND GARDEN CENTER OPERATIONS
Wholesale Nursery Operations: Commercial production of shrubs,
trees, vines and perennials on the wholesale level. Crop planning, shipping and marketing. Emphasis on container production.
Retail Nursery Management: Theory and practice of retail nursery management including marketing, merchandising and display strategies. Preparation for the California Association of Nurserymen certification exam.

ELECTIVE COURSES IN ENVIRONMENTAL HORTICULTURE
Turfgrass Management: Overview of installation and maintenance of turf. Residential, commercial, recreational and specialty turf.
Tree Care: The care and management of trees. The use of ropes and other safety equipment in tree climbing. Chain saw operation and safety.
Irrigation: Irrigation design, installation and maintenance. Emphasis on landscape use of drip and sprinkler equipment.
Garden Practices: Principles of garden planting and care. Soil improvement, seed starting, transplanting, microdimate, watering, integrated pest management and pruning.
Year-Round Garden Color: Creative use of color in the garden through the seasons. Use of the color wheel in planning flowers and foliage.
Growing Orchids: Introduction to the culture and care of orchids. Topics include growing mediums, fertilization and pest control.
Container Gardening: Cultural and creative options in the use of containers for gardening. Container soils and adaptable plant materials.
Introduction to Xeriscape: Use of drought tolerant plants, efficient irrigation and appropriate design for the water-conserving landscape.
Vegetables and Herbs: Planning a home food garden, indoor seeding, transplanting, matching production to kitchen needs, culture of herbs and vegetables according to season.
