Spring 2012 English
Drop-In Labs

(If the campus is closed, the labs are also closed.)
The CCSF English Department has three primary labs to help students at all levels become stronger writers and readers. Each lab offers different ways to interact and different ways to learn, making for a powerful overlap when teachers, students, and tutors understand what is needed and how our labs, individually and collectively, can address those needs.  Use the labs; learn more.  Here's a printable sheet clarifying what to do and where to do it.

Writing Lab tutoring (Library 207, ph 452-5502) is offered by instructor and student (peer) tutors who work one-on-one with you at any stage of the writing process. Tutors help you work through difficult parts of the writing process and act as readers who provide constructive feedback. They will help you develop strategies to improve your writing and to locate and correct your own errors. Grammar specialists are also available to work with you. Join a writing group too!  Learn more about the lab at the Writing Lab homepage

The English Lab (Library 205, ph 452-5881), is the English Department's drop-in computer lab and has grammar, composition, idea-mapping, and reading software. In R205, lab-credit work must involve integrated technology. There is no one-on-one tutoring, but lab faculty will direct your computer-based activities to help you improve your reading, grammar, research, and essay writing. When possible, faculty will provide quick feedback on writing to match needs with technology.  Immerse yourself in computer-based writing and reading enhancement and groovy multimedia programs. Cyberia and the English Lab are very cool. Learn more at the Cyberia homepage.

The Reading Lab (Library 207, ph 452-5510) has a wide range of paper and computer resources to help you improve your reading comprehension and speed, including specific skills such as making inferences and increasing vocabulary. The lab also offers one-on-one reading tutoring sessions to improve your comprehension and comfort--regardless of course level or whether you're reading a novel, an essay, an assignment, or a handout. Join a reading group and discuss literature with a group led by an English instructor. Learn more at the Reading Lab homepage.
