Credit ESL Program

The Credit ESL Program is designed for students with academic goals who wish to complete a two-year degree or vocational certificate at City College or transfer to a four-year college or university. The program includes six levels of instruction from Beginning (ESL 110 - 6 hours per week) to Advanced (ESL 160 - 4 hours per week). Grades are given and students earn credit toward an AA/AS degree or transfer to a university. Classes are offered at the Ocean, Downtown and Mission campuses, and other locations in San Francisco. Morning, afternoon and evening classes are available.

How to Enroll in Credit Classes:

1. Application - File an application for admission with the Office of Admissions and Records, Conlan Hall, Room 107, Ocean Campus or contact the counseling office at other campuses. Foreign students must have a score of 475 or higher on the TOEFL. (Note: All students must also take a math or an algebra test)

2. Placement Test - Take the ESL Placement Test. The test is offered at various times at the Ocean campus. You should receive information on the testing schedule when you submit your application or you can call the Testing Office at 239-3129. You must bring a picture I.D. (driverís license, passport, or California I.D.) to the placement test.

3. Orientation - Find out what level of ESL you placed into and receive information about registration, programs and services for students.

4. Counseling - Meet with a counselor before registering for classes. The counselor will help you select your ESL classes and other classes.

5. Registration -  Buy a Schedule of Classes at the bookstore at the Ocean campus to find out when the classes you need and want are offered. Schedules are also available at other campuses. Enroll on the date and time on your registration ticket and pay your fees. ESL Faculty Advisors are usually available at registration to answer your questions about the ESL program.
