Due at Lecture on 2/17/10
1. What is the concentration of OH- in a 0.01 M HCl solution?What is the concentration of H+ in a 0.5 M solution of KOH?Answer: 1 x 10-12; 2 x 10-14
2. What is the hydrogen ion concentration in a solution of pH 1.5? The pH of blood serum is 7.4. What is the hydrogen ion concentration of blood serum? Is blood acidic or alkaline?
3. What is the pOH of a 0.01 M solution of KOH? What is the pH of this solution?
4. Find the concentrations of the various species present in a 0.10 M solution of nitrous acid, HNO2. Ka = 7.2 x 10-4 for HNO2. What is the pH of this solution?
Answer: [H+] = [NO2] = 0.0081 M, [HNO2] = 0.09 M; pH = 2.095. Find the concentrations of the various species present in a 0.0108 M solution of hypochlorous acid. Ka = 2.90 x 10-8 for HClO. What is the pH of the solution?
6. Find the concentrations of the various species present in a 0.025 M solution of hydrofluoric acid, HF. What is the pH of the solution? Ka = 6.5 X 10-4.
