Chapter Reading
Assignments in Zumdahl 5th/6th- Chapter 16.3, 16.4, 16.6, 16.7; parts
of 16.5 (see assignments and Dr Su; as time allows )
Primary Activity/Homework/Resource - Crystalline Solids Activity Worksheet; this is to be done with the PC program below, but it can also be done with models or readings/pictures. I will have "mini lectures" to assist and you should ASK questions as you work through the structures.
Dr Su's Comments/Notes on this topic ( coming soon ?)

Resources we will be using during this section of the course. |

Crystal Structures - Metals, Ionic, Network Covalent |
Crystalline Solids Program Installer ( 1.56 MB ) This program runs on Windows 98, 2000 and XP. You can also download from the Molecular Science Site. |
If you run the Crystalline Solids and the program's display appears blank, you need to obtain the updated video card drivers that support the OpenGL graphics library. Download them from your computer manufacturer's website. I helped develop the original version (UNIX) at UCLA as a graduate student and then we updated to this one during the MolSci and FLASH grants. I continue to think about ways to improve it. Ask me for the worksheet activity that is used for General College Chemistry. Conducted by the FLASH consortium and hosted by the Molecular Science Project at UCLA. |
| Crystal Structures | Structures of Simple Inorganic Solids | Four Lectures online, one from an Inorganic course in England. More details than we are working on, but good images; similar terminology and approach; good reference section ( I use those books myself). |
| Crystal Structures | Structures of Crystals | CHIME plugin needed. So us Mac folks, do not feel too left out. |
Crystal Structures |
Solid State Chem for Engineers | Oh, cool! Chem 101 at Univ of Penn uses your Zumdahl and they use the same figures that I have shown you. Now I don't have to create a website. ;-) |

Same school as the Symmetry tutorial. |
| IF Time Allows, then we will....cover these below. | ||

Semiconductors and more |
Band Theory Tutorial (Washington University) |
You can ask me for a hard copy of the resource/website. |
| Semiconductors and more | Short Band Theory Tutorials | Beginner, Intermediate and Advance levels discussed. Take a look at Easy and Intermediate. Advance is "only for the brave" as the website states. =) |
| Periodic Prop. | Periodic Table Data/Trends | From MIT |

You can ask me for a hard copy of the resource. |
