Information for Chemistry 32:
Prerequisites: Concurrent enrollment in lecture section
Description: Chem 32 is a laboratory course designed to accompany the Chem 32 lecture. Basic laboratory techniques are introduced, and the experiments provide concrete examples of the concepts discussed in the Chem 32 lecture.
"General Organic & Biochemistry: An Applied Approach", by James Armstrong; Brooks/Cole Cengage Learning
Chemistry 32 - Laboratory Manual - Available at CCSF Bookstore
Notebook, scientific calculator, time piece, and safety glasses or goggles.
Attendance During The Beginning of the Semester:
Lab Attendance: Attending the lab is crucial during the add/drop period. If you miss a lab, your lab instructor may give your spot to another student. IF YOU SHOW UP LATE FOR LAB, YOUR INSTRUCTOR MAY GIVE YOUR SPOT TO ANOTHER STUDENT. LAB CLASSES BEGIN AT THE DESIGNATED TIME AND NOT 1 MINUTE AFTER THE DESIGNATED TIME.
Experiments: Approximately 150 points Quizzes: Approximately 150 points Preparation: Approximately 30 points Lab Practical: 50 points 380 POINTS
The laboratory score will be normalized to a point total designated by your lecturer. This point total will be applied towards your final course grade!
All students are to read the procedure for the experiment before attending the lab. Prior to being allowed to participate, each student must complete the pre-lab (if available) and turn it in at the beginning of the lab session. Quizzes will be announced 1 week in advance (however, unannounced quizzes may be given if students come to lab unprepared to do the work). A Lab Record Sheet is to be handed in at the end of each lab session. Failure to do so will result in a deduction of points for that lab write-up.
During quizzes, students are allowed to use their OWN scientific calculators. Under no circumstances are cell phones, lap top computers, palm pilots, or any devices with the ability to access the internet and/or store large amounts of data allowed. Use of such devices will result in an F grade for the exam or quiz. Students who fail to take the lab practical final exam will receive a failing grade for the lab.
NOTE: Students who receive a D or F in the lecture and receive a passing grade in the lab will not be assigned a satisfactory passing grade (e.g. C or better).
A-: 90 - 100 %
B-: 80 - 89.99 %
C-: 65 - 79.99 %
D-: 45 - 64.99 %
(Note: The college does not officially recognize minus grades; e.g., a B- will be recorded as a B)
Attendance: Regular attendance is crucial for success in the course. Absences will result in zero points for work missed. Should you miss a lab session, you are held responsible for the material missed. Students who have 3 absences (excused or unexcused) may be dropped from the course. THERE WILL BE NO MAKE-UPS.
Friday, February 3, 2012 - Last day to add credit classes or to change sections in person or online using Web4.
Thursday, February 9, 2012 - Last day to drop class with no "W" notation on transcrpit.
Thursday, April 19, 2012 - Last day to drop class and receive a "W" notation on transcript.
Although the instructor has the option to withdraw students from his/her class based on a high absentee rate, IT IS THE STUDENTS' RESPONSIBILITY TO OFFICIALLY WITHDRAW FROM THE CLASS. Failure to do so will result in an F grade assigned to the course.
Laboratory Equipment: All students will share common equipment in the lab. No lockers will be issued in the laboratory. Nevertheless, students are held responsible for cleaning all their equipment at the end of each lab and to return the equipment to their proper location.
Safety: Safety glasses with side shields or goggles are to be worn by anyone in the laboratory from the time that the first student begins working until the last student finishes. Anyone not wearing eye protection will be asked to leave the laboratory. Contact lenses are not recommended. Only registered students may be in the laboratory - no guests. Please report any accident or injury, however minor, to the instructor. Do not eat, drink, or smoke in the lab.
Cleanliness: Please clean up your work area as you finish the experiment. Also, clean up any spills. Replace caps on bottles and jars. Failure to do so will result in a deduction of points from your laboratory grade for preparedness.
Procedure: The majority of the experiments are to be done individually. For some experiments, students may work in pairs (not in groups of three or four unless instructed to do so). Each student must submit his/her own laboratory record sheet. Students must read and study the experiments before coming to lab. Pre-lab quizzes may be given.
