Note: Due to a faculty shortage, this course will most likely be canceled for the Fall 2008 semester. Please see schedule for updated listings. http://www.ccsf.edu/Schedule/Fall/chemistry.html Chemistry 40 Online HybridIntroduction to Chemical Principles Instructor: Torrey Glenn What is Chem 40? Is this the right class for me?Chemistry 40 is primarily designed to prepare students for college level General Chemistry (Chemistry 101A or 103A at City College). The chemistry department has found that students who have a strong chemistry preparation do significantly better in General Chemistry than students who have little or no chemistry preparation. If you will need to take Chem 101A or 103A and have never taken chemistry before, or feel that you need additional preparation, then this is the right course for you. Chemistry 40 is an introductory study of the fundamental laws and concepts of classical and modern chemistry, including quantitative reasoning and problem solving, nomenclature, the mole concept, stoichiometry, atomic and molecular structure, gases, solution chemistry and acid-base chemistry. These topics are the foundation of the General Chemistry courses (101A/103A). If you would like more information about Chemistry 40, or other courses in the chemistry department, please visit the Chemistry Department website. PrerequisitesChemistry 40 has an Elementary Algebra (MATH 840) prerequisite. You should have taken this course recently. If you need to review, please do so before the start of the course. I will not have an algebra review at the start of the course, but will expect you to know the material.
How is the online hybrid course different from the regular course? The material that will be covered in this online course is the same as what would be covered in the traditional lecture and lab course. While you will not attend a traditional lecture, there will be weekly assigned reading, homework, online posting and a weekly lab meeting. Active class participation in an online environment is a course requirement. If you are not comfortable interacting with other students through e-mail and discussion boards, this course may not be appropriate for you. Please note that this is not a self paced course. The workload is similar to what you would encounter in a lecture course, and pacing will also be similar. You will need considerable self discipline in order to complete assignments outside of the traditional classroom environment. The City College of San Francisco Distance Learning Program has a short self evaluation to help you determine whether an online course is appropriate for you.
Why is this called a "hybrid" course? This course has both an online component and a face-to-face component. It is therefore considered a "hybrid" of a traditional lecture/lab course and an online course. You will attend a mandatory weekly laboratory session. The lab meets each week on Wednesdays 6-9pm. The first lab session will be used as a course orientation. Exams and quizzes will also be given during this face-to-face weekly session.
Information for Students with DisabilitiesStudents who need academic accommodations should request them from the Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) located in the Rosenberg Library, Room 323 on the Ocean Campus. Telephone: 415-452-5481 (V) 415-452-5451 (TDD). DSPS is the campus office responsible for verifying disability-related need for academic accommodations, assessing that need, and for planning accommodations in cooperation with students and instructors as needed and consistent with course requirements. Or visit the Disabled Students Programs and Services Web Page.
