1) All Chem 101A sections are currently filled and have waiting lists. If you did not attend a Chem 101A lecture during the first week of the semester (January 17-20), it is extremely unlikely that you will be able to enroll in Chem 101A this semester. Students who attended the first class meeting have priority over those that did not.
2) All students who have not already enrolled in Chem 101A must demonstrate that they have satisfied the course prerequisites (Chem 40 and Math 860 or a higher math class) before they will be allowed to enroll in the course. Click here for detailed information about the Chem 101A prerequisites. Click here for an information sheet that details what we expect you to know when you enter Chem 101A. (This handout refers to a list of elements and ions "on the back of the sheet" - click here to see this list.)
3) Most students who did not take Chem 40 at CCSF will need to take the CCSF chemistry placement test. This test will be given on Tuesday, January 24th at 3:30 PM and on Friday, January 27th at 11:00 AM. The location is Conlan Hall 101, on the main CCSF campus at Ocean and Phelan avenues. For more information about the placement test, click here.
4) The required course materials are:
Lecture textbook: Chemical Principles by Steven Zumdahl (available at the CCSF bookstore or through many online sites; you can use either the 6th or the 5th edition)
Lab manual: Chem 101A Lab Manual (only available at the CCSF bookstore)
Scientific calculator (be sure that it can handle scientific notation conveniently and that it can calculate logarithms. You do not need a $100 graphing calculator)
Safety glasses or safety goggles (you can get these at the CCSF bookstore annex, at any other college bookstore, or at any hardware store)
Lab notebook (available at the CCSF bookstore annex, but do not purchase this until your lab instructor tells you what type you will need)
