The Broadcast Electronic Media Arts Department has a three-fold MISSION:

1. Teaching the history, the issues, and the impact of broadcasting and other electronic media in a global societal context, emphasizing media literacy as a key part of the development of critical thinking skills which form the cornerstone of a life-enriching liberal arts education.

2. Teaching the application of those analytical skills to the design and the creation of content for electronic media--focusing on writing, story-telling, teamwork, leadership, and preparation for further study at the university level.

3. Teaching audio, video, and performance craft skills that are consistent pre-requisites for employment in the quickly evolving electronic media industry.

The comprehensive curriculum includes programs in areas of: video production, video editing (analog and digital), radio station operations, sound design, sound production, and broadcast journalism.

During the first semester a Broadcast Electronic Media Arts Department student should enroll in general education classes -- you are encouraged to register in a broad range of these courses. For example: art, business, computer science, English, film, foreign language, graphic communications, history, journalism, multimedia, music, photography, speech, theater arts, and the sciences.
A first semester student should also select from:

Introduction to Broadcast Electronic Media Arts - BCST 100
Writing For Broadcast Electronic Media - BCST 110
Audio Production - BCST 120 and/or
Television Studio Operations - BCST 140

The Broadcast Electronic Media Arts Department has articulation agreements with many of California's best colleges and universities. This means that if a student takes an agreed on sequence of classes and maintains the recommended grade point average, that student has direct and improved acccess to the four year college. The student transfers in as a junior and is often in great shape to win scholarships and special recognition. City College, in general, and the Broadcast Electronic Media Arts Department, specifically, have made these articulation arrangements with some of the best four year colleges and universities in California.
For recommendations on a sequence of courses in particular subject areas or for specific information regarding transfer arrangements consult with the department's chairperson for details.
