Hale, Ph.D.
Faculty
Cecil
Hale has been a full-time faculty member within the Broadcast Electronic
Media Arts department at City College of San Francisco since 1986. He was
awarded tenure in 1988. In addition to his department assignment he also
serves as by-courtesy professor in the department of African-American Studies.
His teaching assignments have included: (1) Audio Production, (2) Digital
Audio, (3) Television Production,(4) Announcing and Performance, (5)
Multi-track Audio, (6) Mass Media and Society, (7), Radio Management and
Production, (8) and Internships. He is also General Manager of KCSF-FM,
the campus-based city-wide radio station. His course, Minorities
and the Mass Media, is the only offering within the department granted
Honors classification by the college. He has served on numerous college-wide
committees and was awarded Great Teacher of the Year honors by the college
and Academic Senate in 1991.
Hale's
previous and concurrent assignments have included stints as (1) Lecturer,
Mass Media Institute/Department of Communication at Stanford University
(six years), (2) Lecturer, Music/Recording Industry Program at San Francisco
State University (10 years) , and (3) Lecturer, Broadcast Communication
Arts department at San Francisco State University.
Before
the academy, Dr, Hale was an active member of the Hollywood entertainment
industry where he served as Vice-President/ A & R and General Manager
of the Urban Music Division of Capitol Records. His many executive producer
credits include projects with such artists as Natalie Cole, Peabo Bryson,
Maze, Minnie Ripperton, Angela Winbush, Taste of Honey, George Duke, and
Nancy Wilson. Prior to Capitol, Hale was National Director of Promotion/Publicity/Urban
Music for Phonogram/Mercury Records of the Polygram Group.
Hale's
broadcast media experience includes many years as performer and programmer
for several major market radio stations and of being a fixture in Chicago
radio for a decade at WVON. His television experience includes productions
of many local educational projects and serving as Media Advisor/Network
Television to the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the early '80's.
He
is former National President of the National Association of Television
and Radio Artists. (NATRA)
Dr.
Hale is a member of several trade organizations and is an associate member
of the American Bar Association. He is an elected Fellow of the Society
for Values in Higher Education. He is also member of several civic organizations
including the NAACP, a Founding Member of Operation PUSH, and others. He
currently serves as the National President of the African-American Alumni
Association of Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government.
His biography is listed in Marquis Who’s Who in the West, Who’s Who in
America, and Who’s Who in the World. He was chosen and participated as
a 2000 national academic participant by the Academy of Television Arts
and Sciences.
A
much sought after speaker on issues regarding media, race, new media, and
public policy, Hale is quoted in many articles and books and is a member
of the Advisory Board for the Annual Edition of Race and Ethnic Relations
(Dushkin).
Professor
Hale's academic preparation includes the Ph.D. in Communication (Union
Institute '78), M.P.A. (Harvard University, John F. Kennedy School of Government
'95), M.A. in Communications (IUC '75) and was a Fellow at U.C./Berkeley
('92). His undergraduate studies were at Southern Illinois University.
