Dan Olmsted grew
up in Palo Alto, California, and
studied 16mm film
production while in high school
there. He
attended UC Santa Cruz, receiving a degree in Literature, and then spent
several years as a performing musician. He toured and recorded with
a number of popular groups, and his discography includes albums by Carmaig
de Forest, New EZ Devils, Mushroom, and more.
His interest in film
brought him back to the Bay Area, where he studied film as a graduate student
at SF State University. While enrolled there he joined the staff
of Berkeley's Saul Zaentz Film Center, a facility which produces sound
tracks for feature films. Dan has been on the staff at Saul Zaentz
for more than fifteen years, working mostly as a re-recording mixer.
His credits are varied, and include films by John Waters, Joan Chen, Anthony
Minghella and many local filmmakers.
Dan has taught at
City College since 1996. He teaches "Sound for Film" in the Film
Department and "Audio Production Lab" in the Broadcast Electronic Media
Arts Department. He periodically conducts seminars at the Film Arts
Foundation, and
assists at Stanford University's Documentary Film program.
