Internship: Mountain Lake Research Project

The California Academy of Sciences has set up groups of volunteers to monitor the progress of restoration efforts at Mountain Lake, at Lake Street and Park Presidio Boulevard in the Presidio. Mountain Lake is one of the few remaining natural lakes on the San Francisco peninsula.

Different groups are engaged in monitoring reptiles and amphibians, birds, zooplankton, and water quality. Mountain Lake is currently undergoing transformation as part of an Enhancement Plan involving the Golden Gate National Parks Association, the Presidio Trust, and the National Park Service who will use the data from the California Academy of Science's monitoring effort to inform decisions during the restoration effort and to evaluate the success of the restoration.

Volunteer monitors will receive training on protocol and equipment, be part of a larger research project, and see data they collect contribute to the management of a rare resource in San Francisco. Part of the project will give interns the opportunity to analyze, summarize, and present data at a symposium hosted by the California Academy of Sciences each Spring.

There are four areas of research open to interns
