Heron’s Head Park, formerly Pier 98, but is now a restored wetlands area in San Francisco’s Bay View Hunter’s Point Community. Since October of 1999, volunteers have been continually restoring and maintaining the area for the shorebirds and for recreational use. The Center for Habitat Restoration, as well as other organizations, offers on-going internship and volunteer opportunities at Heron’s Head Park.
Students in the Honors Program are currently involved in bird monitoring at Heron’s Head Park. In February 1999, biology student Andrew Rush took censuses of bird species, and after more than 70 hours over a 10-month period, he collected population data for 77 species of birds. Thus, the bird monitoring was continued as an honors project for Biology 20: Introduction to Ecology students. Collection of this bird data will aid in gaining a better understanding of what is going on ecologically in the park and to provide population information on the bird species that use the wetlands. Check out the current bird census data here.
