Personal Statement:

I was born in Kunming, Yunnan in the southwestern part of China.  I came to the United States at an early age, and received most of my education here.  I earned a BA from the University of California, Berkeley, a teaching credential, and a Master’s degree from San Francisco State University.  I enjoy visiting China and have led tours to China as part of the CCSF Summer Study Abroad Program.

I enjoy teaching the two semester courses of Chinese.  It is personally gratifying to witness the transformation of students who have no background in speaking, reading, or writing Chinese.  I wish to enhance their love for the Chinese language and culture.  In the past six years, I have taught both Cantonese and Mandarin.

My class activities always focus on student interactions.  I use pair work and group work to encourage students to communicate in Chinese.  When students help each other, they utilize their language skills.  Language games are often played in class to challenge the students to think critically in the target language.

A number of my former students pursue higher language skills and go on to study or to teach English in China.
