The objective of the A136A illustration course is to introduce the student to the professional field of illustration. Instruction will focus on principal areas within the field (Editorial, Advertising, Fashion, Fantasy and Scientific), its history, career aspects, and current trends. Students will explore and apply a variety of media and illustration techniques, while developing critical thinking, research, and problem-solving skills.

The A136B Intermediate illustration course focuses on Further exploration of visual communication strategies as they relate to the field of illustration. Experimenting with wet and dry media, use of research, techniques and professional presentation in the development of personal style. Focus on professional problem-solving approach in the following areas: book illustration, graphic narrative, caricature, and character design.

ILLUSTRATION COURSES:

Introduction to Illustration 136A (3 units)
Lec-2, lec-4, field trips
Prerequisites: Art 125A and Art 130A
Repeat: max. 6 units
How to prepare for the profession of illustration and learn the processes by which one gets professional results. Emphasis on ideas and originality appropriate to the marketplace. Projects include pencil drawing, pen and ink rendering, color posters and some practical projects which may be reproduced on campus.

Prerequisites: Illustration 136A.
Repeat: max. 9 units
An advanced illustration-design course involved in a close -to professional problem solving approach in some of the following areas: Poster art, fashion, advertising and promotion, children's books and humorous illustration. The emphasis is on the illustrator as the creator of ideas, using their knowledge of drawing, design and style to express ideas graphically and professionally, and present them as portfolio pieces.

Portfolio Preparation for Illustration 136C (3 units)

Prerequisites: Illustration 136B.
Repeat: max. 9 units
Practical problems in illustration with emphasis on contemporary approaches to the subject in color media. Projects include design visualization and finished work for advertising, book and periodical publication, and public relations.

Humorous Illustration 137 (3 units)
Lec-2, lab-4
Prerequisites: Art 130A.
Elements of humorous illustration; basics of exaggeration, distortion and caricature; differentiation of these from the grotesque. Importance of observation and the use of a sketchbook to draw from real life situations.

Many of the art studio courses listed will require a laboratory fee.
