This course will consider the ways Asian Americans have turned to a wide range of cultural productions such as music, performance arts, visual culture, film, and spoken word to challenge and contest dominant meanings associated with Asianness/Asian Americanness. It emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of Asian American cultural productions, with particular attention to the ways race, gender, class, and sexuality inform and shape them. Examination of one of the fastest growing Asian American groups in the United States during the past 15 years: mainland Southeast Asian Americans from Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. The diversity of the Southeast Asian community in the United States will be examined.
