DEGREE CURRICULA

    Major


The City College Art Department offers students a comprehensive lower division program in the areas of Fine Art and Art History, revolving around the basic CORE program. The Art Department prepares students for transfer to upper division courses in colleges and universities or for direct entry into art careers.

Associate Degree in Art. The Associate Degree may be obtained by the completion of all required courses for a major (24 Units) and by fulfilling general education requirements and sufficient electives to meet a minimum of 60 units.

Degree Curriculum. The Art Department, now one of the largest in the State, has been an integral part of City College since it was founded over 55 years ago. Our program is considered to be one of the most outstanding in California. Our faculty of professional artists and art historians provide a dynamic link between CCSF, the San Francisco/Bay Area community and our growing vision of the global community. Our students develop analytical and creative thinking skills and are trained in traditional techniques and contemporary technologies to conceptualize and create works of art enabling them to transfer to and compete at the most prestigious institutions in the country.

Major. The Art Major prepares students for transfer to four-year colleges and universities, provides courses to meet general education requirements towards an Associate of Art Degree with a concentration in either Art History or Studio Arts. The Art Major is designed to assist students to successfully participate in the workplace and the expanding global economy. The Art History concentration will prepare students for upper division and graduate work in preparation for careers in the fields of teaching, museum studies, conservation, scholarly research and writing, gallery and museum management and art appraisal. The preparation received in the Studio Arts concetration will be applicable to a career as a fine artist, small business entrepreneur, designer and many other technical and aesthetic specialties.



Concentration in Art History (PENDING STATE APPROVAL)

Art History majors must first complete six units of the required series of core courses (ART 101, 102, 103). Additionally a choice of four Art History courses must be taken from the list of electives below for the total of 12 units. Art History majors are also required to complete two studio arts classes (ART 125A and 130A) for a total of 6 units towards the 24 units required for the major.

Concentration in Studio Art (PENDING STATE APPROVAL)

A Studio Major must complete Basic Design (ART 125A) and Basic Drawing (ART 130A) and two Art History courses: One from ART 101, 102, 103, 109, and another from ART 104, 105, 106, 107, 108, 116 or 118. The remaining 12 units may be completed in one or more of the following areas of concentration: Design, Drawing, Illustration, Painting, Printmaking, Mixed Media, Ceramics, Metal Arts, and Sculpture. A student may choose to generalize and not specialize in any one area. Prerequisite classes must be completed before enrolling in advanced Studio Arts classes.
