Frequently Asked Questions The City College Academic Counselor working with the Transit Partnership will be coming around to the beginning of each class to provide an orientation, answer your questions, and share with you the resources of City College, all of which are now available to you as a student. How do I register in the Partnership? To enroll in the Career Ladder Partnership you need to fill out a WIA registration form with a copy of your driver’s license and MUNI identification card, a Partnership survey, and a City College application. These forms are available from the program coordinator who visits your division or location. If you are not able to meet with the coordinator you may come to the Evans Campus at 1400 Evans Avenue to complete the form. Call 550-4458 to make an appointment or send an e-mail to sftclp@ccsf.edu to make other arrangements. A coordinator can also come to your location to fill out forms if you arrange a group meeting. The coordinator and a counselor will be at the first class meeting to answer any questions. You will also be given a brief orientation to City College. How do I enroll in the Partnership classes? First you must register in the program (see above) and ask the coordinator to put your name on the class list. In addition you need to fill out an on line application for City College. Then show up at the time and location of the class. You will fill out an Add form from the instructor on the first day of class. Will I get paid while to go to class? Participation in the program is voluntary and on your own time. What if my schedule changes and my class has not finished? You must let your instructor know at the beginning of class that your schedule may change. The instructor can make accommodations on a case by case basis. At a minimum you must have successfully passed the mid-term, have good attendance and completed assigned class projects. You may be asked to do a special project to make up for missed classes. In addition, you will still be required to take the final exam. I attended City College a long time ago. Do I still need to fill out an application? Each student must complete an admissions application. If you are a continuing student and have not missed one semester, you do not need to fill out an application. If you have missed one semester or more you need to complete another application. Do I get college credit? Yes, you will get college credit for Career Ladder classes. The only exception is courses that are labeled as non-credit. What is a non-credit class? A non-credit class is an excellent way to begin your college career. They are tuition-free and have a simpler enrollment procedure. In most cases, you can enroll in classes by attending the first class meeting. In non credit, you may join the class anytime during the first three weeks. Students are enrolled on a first come first serve basis. These classes do not lead to a college degree. Do I need to take a placement test? You do not need to take a placement test to take the Partnership classes. If you choose to take math and English courses at City College you will need to take a placement test. Please call the coordinator to help you with this process at 415-550-4458 or visit www.ccsf.edu. Why should I take a placement test? What is the placement test schedule? Placement tests can determine your skill level for English, Math, and Algebra. The test scores from the placement test will determine the appropriate class for your level. This is necessary if you want to complete you Associates Degree. There is no pass or fail on placement tests; they simply determine in which math and English class you should enroll. To view placement test schedules go to http://www.ccsf.edu, click on Student Services and then click on placement test. If you have any questions you may also call 415-239-3124. How can I strengthen my Basic English and Math skills? The Partnership offers classes designed to strengthen your math and English skills. We recommend the Technical Writing class and Math Skills for Muni Employers, both of which are being offered in February 2004. The Learning Assistance Center at the Ocean Campus also has programs providing students with academic support services. Services include tutoring, study groups, and workshops. The Reading Lab, Writing Lab, and three computer labs are located at Ocean campus in the Rosenberg Library. Call the Learning Assistance Center at 452-5502 for more information. Computer Labs with educational learning software programs are located at John Adams, Evans, Southeast, Chinatown/North Beach, Mission and Alemany Campus. Contact the individual campuses for specific hours of operation. I have other units at other community colleges and want to integrate the Partnership classes into this. How can I do this? You will need to contact the counselor at 415-550-4520 to review your transcripts. Will SF Transit Career Ladder classes lead to an AA degree? City College of San Francisco offers both an Associate of Arts (AA) and Associate of Science (AS) degree. All classes that have college credit will be applied towards an Associate Degree. How do I pursue an Associates Degree at City College? We recommend you attend a New Student Orientation, take the English and Math placement tests and meet with a Counselor to design an Educational Plan. You may contact a SF Transit Career Ladder Program Counselor at 415-550-4520 if you would like help in developing an educational plan. You may also call the coordinator at 415-550-4458 to make at appointment with a counselor. |
